Everyone expects a garage door to complain when it's cold. Fewer people expect the muggy stretch of a Michigan summer to be just as hard on it. Humidity works differently than heat — it doesn't trip the opener's thermal switch, it swells the wood and rubber around the door and lets rust creep into the metal. Most of it is cosmetic and cheap to fix. Some of it is your cue to stop and call.
The door jamb and trim swell with moisture
Most garage door openings are framed in wood even when the door itself is steel, and wood absorbs moisture straight out of humid air. On a muggy week, that jamb and the trim around it can swell just enough to narrow the opening, so the door rubs or binds against one side as it travels. It's usually most noticeable at the top corners or wherever the door was already running a little tight. Give it a dry stretch and the wood shrinks back and the rubbing often eases on its own.
If the binding doesn't ease up once the weather dries out, or it's gotten steadily worse over more than one humid season, the jamb may be staying damp — a gutter dumping water nearby, poor grading, or a gap letting water track in are worth checking before the wood swells enough to cause real damage.
The weatherstripping softens and drags
The rubber seal along the bottom of the door and up the sides is designed to flex against the floor and jamb to keep out weather — which means it's also the part built to absorb moisture. In sustained humidity it can soften and swell slightly, and instead of sliding cleanly across the concrete it starts to drag, adding resistance you can feel as the door opens and closes. An older, sun-baked seal that's already going brittle is more prone to this than a newer one.
Quick test for weatherstrip drag
Watch the bottom seal as the door closes. If it's visibly bulging, folding under itself, or you can see it scuffing a line into the floor, that's drag from the seal — not the springs or the opener. A worn or oversized seal is inexpensive to replace and is part of a normal tune-up. If the seal looks fine and the drag is still there, look at the track and rollers next.
Humidity feeds rust on the track and hardware
Warm, moisture-heavy air condenses on cooler metal the same way a cold glass sweats on a summer day — and a garage's track, hinges, and springs are exactly that kind of surface, especially in a shaded garage or one with a below-grade slab. Left alone through a humid stretch, that condensation turns into a light surface rust.
