A garage that bakes in the afternoon sun is a tough place for a machine that carries 150 pounds thousands of times a year. Most hot-weather garage door trouble isn't a broken door at all — it's the heat pushing an opener, a sensor, or the lubricant past its comfort zone. Here's what actually goes wrong when the temperature climbs, and how to tell the fixable annoyances from the calls that need a technician.
The opener overheats and shuts itself off
This is the number-one summer complaint: the door works fine in the morning, then in the heat of the afternoon the opener goes dead — no response from the remote or the wall button — and later that evening it's fine again. That's the opener's thermal overload protection doing its job. Every garage door opener has a heat sensor built into the motor, and when the motor gets too hot it shuts down to keep from burning out. An un-insulated garage can push past 100°F on a sunny day, and if you've cycled the door several times in a row — kids in and out, cars coming and going — the motor tips over that limit and stops.
The fix is patience: give it 15 to 30 minutes to cool and it'll almost always run again. If it's tripping after just light use, or shutting off earlier in the day than it used to, the motor or its capacitor is wearing out and the heat is just the last straw — that's a job for opener repair.
The sun blinds the safety sensors
If your door starts to close and then reverses back up, or won't close at all on a bright afternoon, look at the two little photo-eye sensors near the floor on each side of the door. They shine an invisible beam across the opening, and if anything breaks that beam the opener refuses to close — a safety feature that keeps a door from coming down on a person or pet. Low, direct summer sun shining straight down the driveway can wash out that beam, and the opener reads the glare as a blocked doorway.
Quick test for a sun-blinded sensor
If the door reverses only when the sun is on that side, cup your hand to shade the sensor lens and try again. If it closes, the sun was the culprit. Wipe both lenses clean, make sure they're aimed straight at each other (a nudge knocks them out of line), and a small sun shield or hood over the lens solves a recurring afternoon problem. If it reverses with the sun off it too, see won't close all the way.
Heat, expanding metal, and tired lubricant
Metal expands when it heats up — the tracks, the rollers, and the steel of the door itself all grow a little in the summer. On a door that was already running tight, that extra bit of friction can make it feel slow, sticky, or noisy. Summer makes it worse in a second way: heat thins the grease on the moving parts, and airborne dust settles into it, leaving a tacky film that drags instead of glides.
The cure is simple maintenance. Wipe the tracks clean and hit the hinges, roller stems, springs, and bearings with a garage-door lithium or silicone spray — never WD-40, which strips lubricant rather than adds it. Quiet, smooth operation is usually just clean, lubricated parts. If the door binds hard, jerks, or sounds like it's straining against something, don't force it — that's past a lube job. Dead remotes and keypads
If the wall button works but the remote or the outside keypad doesn't, suspect the battery before anything else — and in summer, heat is usually why. When it isn't the heat — and you should call
Summer heat exposes weak parts, but plenty of failures have nothing to do with temperature and just happen to show up in July. If the door is suddenly heavy to lift by hand, slams down instead of lowering smoothly, or you can see a gap in the spring on the bar above the door, that's a broken or failing spring — not the weather — and it's not a DIY fix. Running the opener on a broken spring can strip the gears and turn a spring job into a bigger one. Frayed cables and a door that's jumped its track are the same story: stop using it and call.
