Garage door panel & section replacement.

Garage door panel replacement in Grand Rapids costs from $399 flat-rate per section. If you backed into the door, took hail damage, or have a single dented panel, you usually don't need a full new-door install — a matching section swap restores the door for a third of the replacement cost. We source factory-matched panels from the original door manufacturer or color-match aftermarket. Most jobs take 90 minutes to 2 hours. Call 616-254-9465.

When section replacement makes financial sense

A new 16' insulated steel door installed runs $1,495-$2,295. A single replacement panel runs $399-$695. If the damage is contained to one or two sections of an otherwise good door, the math is clear — repair, don't replace.

The point where it flips: three or more damaged sections on a 4-section door, or a door that's already aged enough that you'd be replacing it anyway in 2-3 years. At that point, sinking $1,200+ in panel parts into a door that has 2 years left doesn't make sense. Replace.

Common damage we fix

What we source

Direct from the original door manufacturer when available. Most current Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, C.H.I., and Raynor stock panels are 2-7 day order; we schedule the install for when the part lands. For urgent jobs, a same-day aftermarket match is often workable while a factory part is ordered for later (rare, only on commercial calls usually).

What we don't recommend

Bondo'ing a dent. Cosmetic-only fix that lasts ~6 months in Michigan weather before the patch cracks and rust forms underneath. Looks worse than the original dent within a year. Either live with the dent or replace the section.

Hammering out a dent yourself. Steel panels are stamped from sheet that's already been work-hardened. Heating + un-denting at the door rarely returns to original shape; you usually end up with a worse-looking section and a panel that's no longer rigid enough to function.

Mixing brands. A Clopay panel on an Amarr door technically fits because dimensions are standardized but the seam profiles, hinge patterns, and color rarely match. Stick with the original brand when available.

If you backed into your door: take photos before anything else for the insurance claim. The dent + crack pattern at impact + your bumper or trailer hitch tells the adjuster what they need.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I replace a panel or the whole door?
Replace the panel if (a) damage is one or two sections, (b) the rest of the door is in good shape, (c) the door is under ~15 years old. Replace the whole door if (a) multiple panels are damaged, (b) the door is 20+ years old, (c) the door is uninsulated and you want a thermal upgrade, (d) bottom panel is rotted (common on old wood-skinned doors).
Can you match the existing color?
Usually yes — most major manufacturers (Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, C.H.I., Raynor) keep panel stock for current and recent door models. For 10+ year old doors, exact color may not be available; we'll source the closest match or quote a full re-paint of the door to unify the look.
How much does panel replacement cost in Grand Rapids?
From $399 per section for a standard residential steel panel including the part, install, hardware, and re-balance. Premium insulated panels run $495-$695. Wood-skinned panels (rarer) are $595+. Bottom panels with seal and bracket attachment run $475-$595.
How long does the install take?
90 minutes to 2 hours. Pulling the damaged section: 20 min. Mounting the replacement and re-aligning the door: 45-60 min. Re-balancing the spring tension to the (possibly slightly different) door weight: 15 min. Testing and photo-log: 15 min.
Will my insurance cover it?
If the damage was a covered event (vehicle backed into it, storm, vandalism), most homeowner policies cover the repair minus your deductible. We provide an itemized invoice with damage photos for the claim. Wear-and-tear damage (rust, dents from normal use) isn't covered.
What if my door model is discontinued?
Three options: (1) source an aftermarket panel that matches dimensions — common for popular sizes, color matching is closer or exact; (2) source from a salvage door of the same model; (3) replace the full door. We'll diagnose on the visit and tell you which makes financial sense. Sometimes a full door is the better play even though you came in for a panel.
Will the door's insulation R-value still work after?
Yes — we match insulation type to the original panels (or upgrade if you ask). The thermal envelope of the door is restored. If you have an uninsulated door and the damaged panel is your trigger to upgrade, we can install insulated panels throughout and meaningfully cut winter heat loss — quote separately.
