Garage door cable replacement, Grand Rapids.

Garage door cable replacement in Grand Rapids costs from $159 flat-rate for both cables (cables are always paired). Snapped or fraying cables mean the door is one bump from a serious fall — this is one of the few garage door problems where same-day repair really matters. We carry standard residential and commercial cables on every truck. Most jobs take 45-60 minutes. Call 616-254-9465 to book.

What cables actually do

Garage door cables are the steel wires running from the bottom corner of the door, up alongside the track, to the cable drum at the top. They translate the rotational force of the spring (or the lifting force of the opener) into the vertical motion of the door. Without functioning cables, the door cannot lift safely.

Both sides have a cable. Both drums are turning the same axis. The system only works when both cables are intact, properly tensioned, and seated correctly on the drum. When one cable fails, the load shifts dramatically to the other side, the door goes off-track, and the assembly is no longer safe to operate.

Signs you need cable replacement

Why DIY cable replacement is risky

Cables are under significant tension when the door is in any position other than fully open. The drum is locked to a shaft that's holding spring torque. Disassembling without the right technique can let the drum unwind under spring load — and the loose cable can whip with serious force.

Doing it right requires: clamping the door in the down position, releasing all spring tension safely, removing the old cables from the bottom bracket and drum, threading new cables, re-seating the drums, re-winding the spring to exact specification, and re-balancing. Tools, knowledge, and the willingness to stop if something looks wrong.

Cable + spring + drum bundling

About one-third of cable jobs end up bundling with related parts:

We diagnose on arrival and tell you which (if any) bundle makes sense. You decide — no hidden upsells.

Park outside until we arrive. A door with a known-bad cable can drop without warning. If it's blocking your car, we'll move fast — same-day in most cases.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does garage door cable replacement cost?
From $159 flat-rate for both cables on a standard residential door. Cables are always replaced as a pair — replacing one of two same-age cables would leave you with a guaranteed second service call. Commercial or oversized doors run $195-$295.
Why replace both cables when only one is broken?
The intact cable has cycled the same number of lifts as the broken one — typically thousands. It's already worn. Replacing one means another service call within months and an unbalanced door in the interim. The $40-$60 savings on a single cable becomes a $120-$160 second service call. Pairing is the only honest math.
Is a frayed cable dangerous?
Yes. Cables hold the door against gravity. A fully snapped cable can drop a 150-300 lb door suddenly; a fraying cable is at risk of doing so without warning. If you can see broken wire strands sticking out of the cable, stop using the door and call us. Don't run the opener on a known-frayed cable.
What causes cable failure?
Three things: (1) age — cables typically last 8-15 years residential; (2) moisture corrosion — Michigan humidity + salt-air spray rust the cable strands; (3) drum or pulley wear — a roughened drum surface abrades the cable each cycle. We replace the cables and inspect the drums/pulleys; if the drums are worn, we'll flag them.
Can I keep using the door if one cable broke?
Strongly recommend no. The remaining cable is now holding the entire door weight; it's a count-down to total failure, and the unbalanced load may damage the opener or trolley. Park the car elsewhere until the fix.
How long does the replacement take?
Most jobs are 45-60 minutes. Both cables, both drums inspected, spring tension verified, door re-balanced and tested.
Do you replace the drums too?
Only if they're worn. Most calls only need cables. If drums are scored or shows rust pitting, we'll show you and quote the drums ($95 each) before continuing. Replacement drums add ~15 min to the job.
Will I need spring work at the same time?
Sometimes — if the cables snapped because spring tension was wrong (cables came off the drum), the spring needs adjustment or replacement. We diagnose this on arrival; the spring + cable bundle is typically $329-$449 vs. $189 + $159 as separate calls. Spring page →
